The mayor emphasises that Marbella “is once again at the heart of international sport” with the staging of the second edition of the Reserve Cup
During the official presentation of one of the most prominent competitions on the global padel calendar, Ángeles Muñoz stressed that “this is an event that brings together tourism, sport, excellence and global promotion”
The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, has emphasised that Marbella “is once again at the heart of international sport” with the second edition of the Reserve Cup taking place from tomorrow, 18 June, until Saturday 20 June, at Puente Romano. The mayor, who was accompanied by the councillor responsible for the sport, Lisandro Vieytes, emphasised today during the official presentation of one of the most prominent tournaments on the global padel calendar that “this is an event that brings together tourism, sport, excellence and promotion”. Furthermore, it will bring together some of the world’s leading figures in the sport and, for the first time, will include a women’s competition. Muñoz pointed out that the choice of the town as the European host for the competition stems from its historical links with padel. “When Wayne Boich decided to expand the Reserve Cup beyond the United States, he chose Marbella as the ideal destination precisely for a sport in which this city was a pioneer,” she said.
She also pointed out that “the fact that we are here today for this second edition is not only because the first one was a success, but also because of the commitment we all share to continue promoting and developing this great event”. The mayor expressed particular gratitude for the support shown by the founder and CEO of Reserve Padel, Wayne Boich, for Marbella, as well as the involvement of Puente Romano and Sierra Blanca Estates in organising an event which, as she emphasised, “goes far beyond a major sporting event”. “There will be significant international publicity and major celebrities following every match; this would not be possible in any city other than Marbella,” she noted. Similarly, she stated that “we recognise that tourism and sport are the perfect pairing, as they enable the city to send a message to the rest of the world that we are the best place to visit, to live in and to invest in.”
For his part, Boich explained that “when I came here with my family, we quickly realised that holding the Reserve Cup in Marbella was really the only option worth considering”, he said. Boich expressed his gratitude for the support received from the Town Council, Puente Romano Marbella, Sierra Blanca Estates and all the local professionals who have helped to establish the event. He also expressed his desire to “help Marbella grow, not only through the Reserve Cup, but also through future projects linked to padel”.
The event was also attended by player Tamara Icardo, currently number 9 in the FIP rankings, who emphasised the importance of continuing to raise the profile of women’s sport and also highlighted the appeal of the competition format, describing it as “great fun and very different from what we play during the rest of the season”. Similarly, Málaga-born player Miguel Yanguas, currently ranked 8th in the FIP rankings, highlighted the Reserve Cup’s potential for growth and its international impact, whilst the owner of Puente Romano Marbella, Daniel Shamoon, recalled that the first edition “exceeded all expectations” and pointed out that Marbella “continues to establish itself as one of the world’s leading destinations for the practice and development of padel”.
