Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital has launched a new Home Care Unit with the aim of enabling certain diagnostic procedures, clinical care and treatment to be carried out in the patient’s home, thereby improving continuity of care and reducing unnecessary travel, particularly in cases where part of the process can be safely carried out outside the hospital.

The unit is designed to address three distinct yet complementary care needs. It provides general nursing care for chronic patients, the elderly or those with reduced mobility who require regular care or specific procedures at home. It also handles part of the pre-surgical process, carrying out some of the necessary procedures at home to prepare for an operation. Finally, it offers structured follow-up during the post-operative phase, supporting the patient in their recovery following discharge from hospital.

According to Alejandro Rodríguez, Director of Nursing at Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital, “this service addresses the need to support patients who require structured, coordinated and safe care in their own homes. Home care avoids unnecessary travel and helps ensure that part of the care process takes place in an environment that is more comfortable and accessible for them”.

Services available at home

The unit enables tests such as blood tests, clinical checks, electrocardiograms and non-invasive cardiac monitoring to be carried out at home. It also incorporates pre-operative procedures in coordination with the Anaesthesiology Department and facilitates clinical supervision following surgery, including wound assessment, the removal of stitches or drains, the detection of signs of infection and support with pain management. Care is also provided for patients with specific needs, such as advanced wound care, negative pressure therapy, catheter replacement or the administration of treatments prescribed by specialists. All procedures are recorded in the patient’s electronic medical record, ensuring coordinated follow-up among the professionals involved. “Integration into the medical record ensures that care teams always work with up-to-date information, reinforcing the safety and consistency of the patient’s treatment at all times,” says Rodríguez. Furthermore, the unit expands the resources available for patients with limited mobility, those recovering from surgery, or those with complex chronic conditions, enabling clinical follow-up to be tailored to their needs and improving care at home.
