“One of the most interesting parts of my job is ensuring that each client always receives truly deluxe care”
Mr. Thomson, how long have you been the Manager of Nobu Hotel Marbella?
I’ve been running the hotel for 9 months, but I’ve been with the company a lot longer – 17 years, to be specific. In addition to Nobu Marbella, I was also in charge of opening Nobu Ibiza two years ago.
Nobu Hotel Marbella first opened its doors a year ago in the luxurious Puente Romano complex. What has it meant for Marbella that Nobu has set up here?
That’s right, we first opened our doors in March 2018, and had the official inauguration in May of last year. What we wanted to achieve at the time was to create an experiential, lifestyle hotel that would attract elite tourism, which will continue to position Marbella as a model tourist destination on an international level. I think we’re on the right road to achieving it.
Your extensive career in the hospitality industry is well known… When did you start out in this world and what was it like at the beginning?
I started my professional career while I was studying at university in London. I started out as Marco Pierre White’s operations manager at Mirabelle Restaurant and Belvedere Restaurant. It was a great opportunity, as the chef was the youngest in the UK to be awarded a Michelin star.
What are the most interesting aspects of your work, and which is the best?
I love creating concepts to see how they get under way, and above all, analysing the results. What I’ve also found to be one of the most interesting parts of my job is ensuring that each client always receives truly deluxe care.
What is your work philosophy?
My motto is: work hard, pay attention to detail, and have a strong sense of commitment towards the clients. It’s also important to know how to motivate the team. One strong point of Nobu’s business culture in general is betting on talent and giving opportunities to grow. Ultimately, we’re a family and that’s what makes us stand out from the rest.
Why do you think your clients choose Nobu?
On the one hand, everything revolves around gastronomy in Nobu. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s culinary creations are renowned all over the world, and I think the brand has great appeal when it comes to attracting new clients. On the other, we always try to ensure that the client has a unique experience that cannot be found in other hotels.
What characterizes Nobu Hotel Marbella?
An essential part of the hotel is its location within the Puente Romano Complex. The set-up is very intimate, but at the same time, it offers the full range of services and facilities, such as spa, gym, tennis club, etc. Nobu Marbella is a hotel where you’ll never get bored. If you fancy relaxing during the day, you can enjoy the calm atmosphere, and then go out in the evening to have dinner, party and discover the authentic Nobu experience.
Which services would you say make NOBU Hotel a unique space?
Located within the famous Puente Romano Complex, our guests have many privileges, such as being able to choose from 13 restaurants, the four pools of the two hotels, including Nobu Pool, which is exclusively for adults. They have priority access to the La Suite nightclub, and at the same time they can enjoy all the services Nobu offers.
What would you highlight about Marbella as one of the most interesting tourist destinations in the world?
Most importantly, our climate. Marbella has a special micro-climate that not many resorts have. In addition to this, its excellent location, within easy reach of the largest cities in Europe. Marbella also offers an incredible range of sports, an internationally recognised fact. To sum up, Marbella is a destination where you can have fun every day of the year.
Which dish from the restaurant would you recommend?
From the most popular dishes of Matsuhisa’s cuisine, I’d have to highlight the miso-marinated black cod, and my personal favourite, the spinach salad with white truffle and parmesan.
