The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, and the Minister of Public Works, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, today announced the definitive unblocking of the expansion and transformation of the marina after the awarding by the Regional Government of the new concession for a period of 40 years and with a planned investment of 200 million euros
The Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, and the Regional Minister for Development and Mobility, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, today announced the unblocking of the expansion and transformation project for the Port of La Bajadilla in Marbella. The new concessionaire will begin operating the facilities on January 1st, with a planned investment of over €200 million for this expansion. This operation will almost triple the port’s capacity, increasing from 268 to 750 berths and allowing the arrival of larger vessels. The Mayor emphasized that this is “fantastic news for the city” and stressed that it culminates a process that for years has been marked by administrative and legal difficulties. In this regard, she highlighted the work carried out since 2019 by the Regional Government and the City Council to revive this strategic initiative for Marbella and underlined that it will allow the municipality to “grow within the maritime sector, respond to existing demand, and generate new economic and tourism opportunities.” Furthermore, he framed this action within the municipal strategy for the modernization of marinas, alongside the work being carried out at the Virgen del Carmen Marina, Cabopino, and Puerto Banús.
For his part, Muñoz-Atanet highlighted that the awarding of the concession for the expansion of the Port of La Bajadilla will represent “a significant economic boost” for Marbella, with an investment exceeding 200 million euros. He recalled that this project was put out to tender 16 years ago, before the contract was terminated and the file abandoned. In this regard, he indicated that it was the government of Juanma Moreno that revived a project in 2019 that had been stalled for years and has completed a process that required overcoming environmental procedures, coastal and legal reports, and the corresponding bidding process.
The regional minister emphasized that the project will entail “a transformation of the Port of La Bajadilla, with an almost three-and-a-half-fold expansion of the water area and an increase in berths from the current 268 to approximately 750.” “The revival of the La Bajadilla project is yet another example of the strategic path the Andalusian Government is following to revitalize port facilities destined to be an economic and employment driver for the area, especially in a destination like the Costa del Sol,” he stated. Finally, he expressed his gratitude for the invaluable collaboration of the City Council and its mayor in bringing this project back to fruition.
The planned improvements under the new concession will enhance the capacity of the Port of La Bajadilla for large vessels up to 70 meters in length through the construction of a marina with approximately 750 berths. This will allow it to accommodate everything from recreational boats to large yachts and cruise ships, thus meeting the high demand in the area. This will be a major port engineering project, featuring a 1.13-kilometer main breakwater protecting the port on its east and south sides, a 450-meter counter-breakwater for protection on the west side, and a groyne to channel the Primero stream, also intended to separate the stream from Cable Beach and contribute to sand conservation. Environmental integration and regeneration of the surrounding area are planned, with corrective measures including sand replenishment and transfer to Venus, La Bajadilla, Cable, and Faro beaches. The project will also comprehensively transform the port area with new infrastructure, services, a commercial zone, fishing areas, a slipway, and 1,000 parking spaces.
