From the quiet of Mijas to international spaces, Jay Arana creates abstract paintings in which matter, time, meditation and contemplation become a language of their own. His works do not simply seek to occupy a space: they seek to transform it.

A self-taught abstract artista, Arana Works internationally from his studio in Mijas Pueblo, an environment where sea and mountains coexist and which forms an essential part of his creative universe. For him, painting is not simply an artistic practice; it is a way of observing, understanding and expressing the experience of being alive.

His visual language emerges from the meeting point of painting, silence, meditation, Tai Chi and the internal arts. His creative process develops without a rigid formula, through presence and introspection, allowing each work to gradually find its own structure.

It is precisely within this process that materiality takes centre stage.

The memory of matter

Layers of pigment, paint, mortar, copper, rusted iron and other materials build surfaces that seem to have lived before reaching the canvas. Marks, imperfections and transformations are not concealed; they become part of the work.

This relationship with the passage of time is particularly evident in series such as Weathered Earth, inspired by the elements and the processes of nature. Its neutral, weathered and deliberately imperfect surfaces evoke an ancient, timeless beauty.

Connection / Color, by contrast, moves into a more emotional territory. Colour and texture translate moods, emotions and ideas emerging from meditation.

Art that inhabits architecture

One of the most compelling qualities of Arana’s work emerges when his paintings leave the purely exhibitionary context and enter an inhabited space.

His works do not seek to impose themselves or immediately command attention. They enter into dialogue with their surroundings.

His works do not seek to impose themselves or immediately command attention. They simply engage with the space..

Their presence is quiet, yet capable of altering the atmosphere of a room and creating a slower, more sensory experience.

This quality makes his paintings particularly relevant to private residences, interior design and architectural projects, boutique hotels, hospitality spaces, and environments dedicated to wellbeing and contemplation. They are works conceived to live alongside architecture, light and everyday life, bringing depth, character and an emotional connection that goes beyond decoration.

It is a sensibility particularly aligned with the contemporary language of luxury, where sophistication is no longer defined solely by ostentation, but by materials, authenticity, craftsmanship, atmosphere and experience.

“Elements”: When the work finds its space

His first solo exhibition in Spain, Elements, presented at the Vincci Posada del Patio Hotel in Málaga in 2025, demonstrated precisely this ability to create a dialogue between artwork, architecture and viewer. The project explored the passage of time and the transformation of matter, integrating the paintings into a space defined by movement and calm.

A painting that endures

Today, from Mijas and with an international outlook, Jay Arana represents a contemporary sensibility grounded in materiality, serenity and permanence: a way of understanding art not as an object that simply occupies a space, but as a presence capable of transforming it.
